Improving Teacher Programme (ITP)

Supporting teachers to deliver consistently good lessons.

Do you aspire to be graded consistently good in your lesson observations? If so then the Improving Teacher Programme could be for you.

The ITP is delivered over six sessions, normally for between two and three teachers per school or academy. The programme is designed for teachers with the potential to be rated good and currently achieving consistent satisfactory ratings. The programme equips participants with a range of teaching and learning techniques as well as developing their skills and the opportunity to apply these skills in school.

At the end of each intensive course each teacher will have developed the practical strategies and knowledge to transfer into the classroom with the needed sustainability to impact student progress and attainment for all students in line with the new accountability framework

What is the Improving Teacher Programme?

The ITP is delivered in school by outstanding practitioners and provides an opportunity to learn and develop in a school context. The programme is interactive and participants will have the opportunity to see outstanding classroom practice in action throughout the academy.

Participants on the programme will learn more about:

  • the key concepts underpinning 'good' practice in the classroom
  • impact of these concepts on 'good' teaching and learning
  • delivering these concepts through consistent practice
  • using a range of learning activities, lesson observations, facilitated debriefs and follow-up coaching to support the progress of participants
  • self-assessing and auditing their own teaching and using this to deepen their understanding of effective teaching and learning

Key elements

  • Planning lessons
  • Starter activities
  • Plenary sessions
  • Questioning techniques
  • Engaging in learning
  • Challenging learning
  • Assessment
  • Differentiation

Support in your school

Each participant will require a mentor from their school to support them in their activities. Mentors should be outstanding practitioners with responsibility or expertise in teaching and learning. Mentors will need to attend the first and last sessions of the programme, provide support for the participants to work back at their own school on the practical school based tasks and monitor progress against individual action plans.

How much does it cost?

The cost of the programme is £695 which includes six training sessions for participants and two sessions for mentors.
